Shakira’s Waka Waka Success

Shakira made news yesterday that her song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup song — Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) — is the best-selling World Cup song ever! Not only that, but the official Waka Waka video received the 4th most YouTube views in history.  When you count the non-official videos, the total is a staggering 350 million views!  Nice job Shaki!

Check it out, then make sure you click for “more” because I have more to say on this subject:

According to a PR Newswire article:

The official video for “Waka Waka” has seen over 170 million YouTube hits making it the #4 most watched video of all time and the #3 most watched music video. Including unofficial “Waka Waka” videos, the total cumulative views are over 350 million. The track was also the soundtrack to Shakira’s hugely successful 1Goal campaign in which Shakira devised the now-famed “Waka Waka” dance and tasked her fans around the world to “dance for 1Goal” and upload their “Waka Dance” videos to spread the word for education. Fans in overwhelming numbers made videos and uploaded them to YouTube with flash-mobs popping up across the world – together gathering more than 400 million views and helping to promote 1Goal’s campaign for universal education.

I am a big Shakira fan and have been ever since her 1996 hit, “Estoy Aqui.”  So I’m happy for her for this accomplishment.

But….

There was another World Cup song out there that I actually liked better! It was by the Lebanese singer Nancy Ajram and Somali rapper K’Naan, called “Waving Flag.”  It’s half English, half Arabic, fun, positive and very catchy.  I love the chorus:

Our cheer is of course positive

Cheer full of love

We feel we are free

Together we’ll cheer from the heart, my darling

For your information, know that you’ll find your dream

Give me your hand

Cheer with your flag

This flag, this flag

Check it out!

The best part is there is also a Spanish version by one of the best Spanish voices out there, David Bisbal!  This makes me so happy!

Can’t believe we have to wait another four years for another World Cup!

And finally, Akon had a song out there that was pretty good. I’m not really sure if it was for World Cup or for the Africa Cup (GO EGYPT!)

You can see a bunch of other 2010 World Cup songs here.
